HPV vaccine – Why is it so important

HPV vaccine – Why is it so important

HPV, the human papillomavirus can affect different parts of the body. The virus is transmitted through sexual contact. Many strains of the virus are harmless and can be treated but some strains are of high risk and can lead to cancer. Usually, the HPV virus is killed by the immune system depending upon a person’s immunity along with the help of medications. But in some cases, a part of the virus lingers on in the body and turns normal cells into cancerous cells. It takes years for cancer to develop and there is no way to find out if cancer is developing after one has contracted the HPV virus.

Cervical Cancer caused by the HPV virus is the fourth most common cancer among women globally, according to the WHO. But the fact is that the HPV virus can affect men too and anyone sexually active. Therefore, getting vaccinated against this virus is very important.

Two vaccines licensed globally are available in India; Gardasil and Cervarix but at high rates. The launch of the CERVAVAC vaccine made in India at an affordable rate for the HPV virus can save many lives. India accounts for 1.23 lakh cases and around 67,000 deaths every year due to the HPV virus.*1

This vaccine will be commercially available in India by the end of 2022.

Why is the HPV Vaccine important?

This vaccine can give you 90% protection against the HPV virus. It also protects against head, neck, and anal cancers in both men and women. It also protects men against penile cancer, and women against cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, and vulvar cancer.

The vaccine can also be administered to children and can be given from the age of 9 yrs and adults up to age 45. It works best when given between the age of 11 and 12. It is important to be given much before one contracts the HPV virus.

There is no test to detect the early onset of HPV related cancer among men therefore vaccination is a must. Among women, a HPV test can detect the early onset of cervical cancer.

Cervical Cancer is preventable with the help of the vaccine and can be treated effectively among those vaccinated.
