5 Things to Do (Other Than Worry) when Diagnosed with Cancer

We endeavor to raise more awareness about cancer so that it is treated in the first stage itself and more people are healed early. But at times many of us don’t watch out for cancer symptoms before we notice some drastic change in our body. By the time we reach the doctor, tests are carried out and diagnosis is done, stress, tension, and worry hit us hard.

Do remember that worrying or stressing yourself out will only make life more difficult for you and aggravate cancer in your body.

  1. Acceptance- No one lives their lives thinking that one-day cancer might affect me. It usually catches you unawares. Most patients live in self-denial. How could this happen to me? I lived a healthy life. Once diagnosed, the best thing to do is accept it and focus on recovery.
  2. Opt for the best medical treatment- Choose your doctor and hospital thoughtfully. Check your finances, Mediclaim policy etc. Make sure you get at least 3 opinions on your case from an experienced oncologist. Ensure all tests are carried out and a correct diagnosis is made. Discuss your course of treatment with your doctor. Do not hesitate to speak what is in your mind openly. Clear all your doubts.
  3. Self-care- Turn towards yourself. Stop looking at yourself with sadness and despair. Analyze what needs to be done. For that, you must be aware of the type of cancer you have. How inflammation plays a role in cancer. How much exercise do you need and when to avoid strenuous activities?  Your diet is most important. Get in touch with a dietician and ensure you are eating the right amount of nutrition.
  4. Build a support system- Not everyone is lucky to have a large supportive family. If you do, speak to them, and ask for support, help in carrying out your daily activities, etc. If not, there are many NGOs or Cancer Help groups. Seek help and support. You are not alone in this journey. You can join groups of cancer survivors where you will get inspiration from others on how they fought their battle.
  5. Alternative Therapy- Research and facts have proven that along with regular Cancer treatment alternative therapy has worked in reducing the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. E.g Acupuncture, aromatherapy, hypnosis, and music therapy help reduce nausea and headaches after chemotherapy. Pro and prebiotics help bowl movements when on antibiotics. Yoga and breathing techniques help with nervousness.
